Ashmount swimmers swim to Silver spot

This week saw the first ever Islington Primary Schools Swimming Championships for children in Years 3 and 4 take place at Cally Pool. Spread over 2 days, children from 10 Islington Primary Schools competed to be crowned champions. There were a variety of races with individual Freestyle, Breaststroke, and Backstroke and also relays, for medley (mixture of strokes), mixed relay, and freestyle.Split into different year groups and genders the children were then told which races they would be competing in and were then ready for action.

After a full morning of competition with the children performing brilliantly in their races we headed off back to school. With points allocated on finishing times it was hard to gauge how well we had done, but the feeling was that were pretty consistent in all the races, winning some and finishing close behind in others. The children were very vocal and supportive of their teammates and I’m sure this brought out an extra 10% in their efforts.

The year 3 girl’s team consisted of Ava, Bella, Charlotte, and Molly, whilst the boys were Jake, Louie, Luca and Mario. The year girls and boys were made up of Faith, Iva, Jodie, Margot, Millie and Bobby, Han, Louie and Sidney. With results needing to be added up the children left the pool without an idea of where they had finished, however I had stated a top five finish in my opinion would be very pleasing.

The waiting was over, as results came through Thursday morning, I gathered the children to read the results out, and there was a slight tinge of disappointment they had finished second, but when they were made aware of their achievement, that was all forgotten about and the news they would receive Silver medals, definitely got rid of any lingering thoughts! For the record we finished on 325 points 23 behind the winners Canonbury Primary.

I would like to say a huge well done to all the children who took part, you were all fantastic in your races, I mentioned it was a team effort and we made Ashmount look like a great team. Also a big thank you to the parents who helped me out on the day, it made a big difference having you around to help with all the little jobs that needed sorting out!

So now the standard has been set, next year we will try again, so any children in Yr 2 upwards if you want to be a part of the team, get practising and maybe you could join our boys and girls.
