York Minster poems

Below are just a few of the fantastic poems written by Year 6 following their recent visit to York Minster.

York Minster

Dark and gloomy,

The silent darkness

Retreated to the rear of

The giant cathedral.

Now light,

Holy light,

Candlelight,

Getting brighter and brighter

‘til there was a blinding beam.

The light had risen again.

Jesus had risen again.

(O.D.)

York Minster

As I crept up the stone stairs

I heard the faint noise of birds rappingon the roof

The air was filled with sombre sounds

And the people followed it

When I got further in the Minster

I heard a theatre of praising.

(H.D.)

York Minster

The glisten of the window brightens your day

All it does is make me want to pray.

You may think, “been there, done that,”

But you will never do anything the same.

Embedding you in their history

You might be filled with mystery

The flame of the candle is dancing

Drawing you into the light.

(E.H.)

York Minster

I walked up to the Minster

Passing all tourists

I looked up

A large giant towering over me

Loving hands of God drawing me in

I glanced up in awe

The grand oak beams holding it with all its might

A whole range of sizes: fat, thin, large and small

Lights dancing, darting from left to right

I walked into a dark crypt

It gave me goose-bumps

And a chill down my spine.

(C.H.)

York Minster

Lights get dimmer,

Colder, darker, quiet

God is listening.

Shadows flicker in the darkness.

Mysterious secrets around you

Reflecting thoughts from my mind.

Uncase my heart

Candlelight enclosed the room.

Sombre is everywhere

The majestic toll of bell peals.
