Hanukka

Hanukkah is the name of the festival that Jewish people celebrate.

Hanukkah 2015 begins in the evening of Sunday, December 6th and ends evening of Monday, December 14th. ( It lasts 8 days and 8 nights).

They celebrate Hanukkah because the Greek king of Syria orded the Jews to worship Greek gods, most Jews were angry and they decided to fight back. In 165 B.C the Jewish defeted the Syrian army and reclaimed their temple.

Hanukkah is a celebration of this victory.

In Hebrew the word Hanukkah means dedication.

Each night another candle is lit, ( 9 candles are lit all together).

Each of the 8 days children recieve a small gift. traditionally money.

During the festival the children play games.

They eat fried food to remember the sacred of oil, such as potato pancackes and doughnuts.

Hanukkah is a family celebration, where families get together to eat, dance and give gifts.
