The colour of British uniforms

In a war, it is important to have the right equipment and uniform. One of the reasons Britain won the war was because they were the best equipped army. They needed, equipment to carry around with them, weapons and appropriate clothing.

A average British soldier on the trenches had:

A flannel under shirt

Woollen pants

Khaki trousers

Winding puttes to keep legs dry (852 miles ordered)

Jackknife

All weather woollen khaki serge

No helmet just a cloth cap

Great Coat

Ankle boots

100% water proof goat skin coat

2 wound dressing in serge (one for bullets going in one for out)

Leather jerkin )good for sliding in mud)

Webbing for carrying kit (this was a very useful way to carry kit like; a water bottle with 2 pints, rations, 50 rounds of ammunition, a bayonet, an intrenching tool to dig their way out of rapid fire and a wooden stick to attach it to, also a gas mask and in 1915, steel helmets were introduced)

A backpack (with a mesh tin for cooking, spare pants and socks, something to sleep in at night and something to wear when it rains

The french werent quite so good. They had:

Navy blue tunic

Bright red trousers

kepi hat

The Germans had:

a leather hat called a picklehorn (with a gold horn on top making it a very simple target to enemy troops)

A feldgrau woollen tunic

Knee high boots

Olive coloured trousers and serge

Belt with ammunition, rations and water
