Trench Tunnelling

Home

The aim of trench warfare was to gain as much ground as possible. To do this, the British, and also the

Germans, started tunneling under 'No Man's Land'.

Then, when they had filled their tunnels with explosives , they blew the tunnels up. This would inflict immense amounts of damage.

Some of the draw backs were that if a Tommy and also a Jerry were tunneling at the same time, their tunnels may overlap each other and the person in the higher tunnel's ground would give way and collapsed on the person below tunnel. This meant almost certain death for both people.

Also if they were tunneling towards

each other, there is the possibility of

running into each other. In this situation

the soldiers would most likely shoot or

attack each other.

Their were various devices to

prevent these scenarios from being a reality. Their were listening devices and doctor's stethoscopes.
