My trip to the National Gallery- By Archie

Recently I went to the National Gallery. Here I am:

Here are a small amount of the pictures and their

artists which I saw when I was there.

Paul Cézanne

Here are two paintings by Paul Cézanne. On the left is a self portrait and on the right is "Avenue at Chantilly" 1888 painted in France.

Georges Seurat

Here is "Bathers at Asnieres, 1884 one of the largest paintings in the hall and Asnieres is a suburb in Paris. You can see the factory in the distance and the people in the painting are factory workers having a rest. This was an unusual subject to paint about at the time.

Camille Pissarro

Bearded Pissarro (1830-1903) was one of the seven main Impressionist artists. Here is one of his paintings which is called "The Louvre under Snow", 1902. It's one of many paintings from a window of an apartment which he rented in 1900.

Vincent van Gogh

One of the most famous paintings in the world, Sunflowers 1888, by the man who cut off his ear, Vincent van Gogh, is an impressionist painting. There are many shades of yellow which Van Gogh thought expressed hope and friendship and he painted this painting for his friend and mentor Gauguin.

Hilaire-Germain-Edgar-Degas

Degas was another one of the main artists as well, born 1834 and dead at the age of 83.

Miss La La, the acrobat, caused a sensation at the Cirque Fernando in Paris, performing various feats of strength. Degas watched Miss La La, perform several evenings in January 1879 and made sketches and drawings which then became a painting that same year.

Alfred Sisley

Born 1839, died 1899, Sisley was another one of the main Impressionists. He grew up in England and then went to an art academy where he met two artists called Monet and Renoir.

Here is one of his paintings, its called "View of the Thames: Charing Cross Bridge," 1874. Sisley was in London in the summer of 1874, while he painted several canvases near Hampton Court.

Claude Monet

Claude Monet, born 1832 and dead 1926, was married twice (first to someone called Camille in 1870, who died 9 years later, and second to someone called Alice in 1892) and had a son called Jean in 1867. He was another one of the main seven Impressionists. Along the way Monet: attempted suicide (1868), painted at La Grenouillere (1869) and had paintings in a very successful gallery in New York (1886).

Here are three paintings of his. On your left is "Water-lilies, Setting sun", about 1907; in the middle is the " Water-Lily Pond", 1899 and on your right is "Flood Waters", 1896. As you can see, he took a liking to water.

For half of his life, Monet lived in a tiny hamlet called Giverny. There he painted many paintings of his water garden such as the middle painting of the three you can see. These paintings became popular and he got enough money to buy the house at Giverny.

The other main artists were Renoir, Cassatt, Morisot and I suppose you could say Manet was as well.
