 Lightning Lands

BANG! CRASH! WALLOP! I woke to the sound of thunder beating like a drum across the roof of our house. My room was pitch black until a big bolt of lightning glided across it, lighting it up like bright fireworks, I almost fell out of bed. My heart pounding in fear, I had an ominous feeling about this storm, what a thunderous start to my day.

I heard dad shout ‘We’ve lost power everyone, don’t panic!’ I jumped up to help Dad. I carefully crept across my bedroom, luckily Mum had made me tidy it the night before, so I knew my path to the door was clear. I cautiously padded my way around in the dark and found Dad in the kitchen. He was looking for a torch or candles, I helped him search.

It was then I found it, hidden at the back of the kitchen draw, nestled amongst loads of old rubbish a glowing golden key. I could not believe my eyes, I had never seen a key shaped like a bolt of lightning before, I snatched it up before Dad saw it. It felt like electricity in my hand, I was excited and nervous all at the same time.

‘Here it is Dad’ as I pass him the torch I had also found. Dad went off in search of the fuse box. I opened my hand to see the glittering key, it was lighting up the whole kitchen with a soft glistening glow. Where did it come from? What door would it open? I wondered perhaps if the storm brought it.

Suddenly the lights turned on the doorbell rang, the microwave ‘pinged’, Dad had found the fuse box and the house was full of electricity again.  I hurried up the stairs fast as I could, slamming the door behind me, I turned on my light and sat on my floor to gather my thoughts. I heard some peculiar noises coming from my wardrobe, it sounded like the fizzing sparks of a firework. The door started to twitch, then it was ajar, I could see lights and sparks bursting from behind the wardrobe door. Nervously I crept towards the wardrobe the key in my hand started shaking and pulsing, drawing me in, I took a deep breath and opened the door. There before me was the most magnificent dazzling door, covered in what looked like gold glitter, bolts of lightning engraved on the door, surely this was where the key belonged.

The door looked familiar somehow, it was like one I’d seen in my favourite computer game, Zelda. It couldn’t be, could it?  The heat from the key was starting to warm my hand, tentatively I brought the key to the lock, gently I turned the key. CLICK! CLUNK! CREAK! The door opened, it was a gateway to my game, I knew this level I had completed it just a couple of days ago. In front of me, there was a monumental maze, imposing, spikey bushes towered above me, I could almost feel the branches creeping towards me as I entered the maze. As I looked down at myself, I realised I had turned into Links I was wearing his green outfit, and the lightning key had turned into an infinity blade. I knew then I had to complete this quest to get home.

Just then I heard a rustling in the bushes behind me, out of nowhere rolled a plump, red fox he bumped right into my feet… ‘Oi, what are you doing here?’ he said. I was flabbergasted, a talking fox? This day was going from stormy to strange, I didn’t know what to expect next. ‘I don’t suppose you could help me, could you?’ I asked the fox. ‘I know it sounds a little crazy, but I walked through my wardrobe, you know on earth, and I’ve been ported here, I think I’m Link and I’m in my favourite video game’. The fox started to chuckle, ‘You’re in Lightning Lands, I can help you, but we will have to work together to get through the mystical maze’. We set off just as mist fell upon us making it difficult for us to see the path ahead.  We could see a bright beaming light coming from the centre of the maze it was guiding us like a star in the night sky. Seconds later, I could hear a high-pitched squeaking noise coming from above, the noise was getting louder and closer, I looked at Fox, and the fox stared back at me. ‘BATS!’ he shouted, ‘quick get down, cover your head!’

We laid on the floor of the maze, the bats were violently attacking us, swooping at our bodies, fox looked up at me ‘any tricks up them green sleeves of yours boy?’ he said. I felt the pulsing of the sword in my hand again, I looked down and it was shining like a bright beacon. Somehow, I found my way to my feet and gained the courage to swing my sword above our heads. The bats had an aversion to the bright light from the sword, fox and I stayed close together and used the light to lead the way through the maze.

Together we found the middle of the maze, there in front of us was another door, much like the one that was in my wardrobe, shining in all its glory, it was a beautiful sight that hurt my eyes to look at. Could this be my way home? But I didn’t have my key anymore, I only had this sword, I needed it to turn back into a key to open the door. Will the sword turn back into a key?
