In order to understand why vocanoes cause so much destruction you first need to understand the crazy science behind THEM! Incredibly, the Earth has 4 different layers: solid inner core, molten outer core, mantle and the crust. The crust is the land we live and walk on and it is also broken into several peices called tectonic plates that are constantly moving and shifting. If one gets jammed and one slides through that causes a volcano. Inside the volcano there is something called Magma that slides upwards through the vent ( vent is the stem that pulls the Lava up) that cause the magma to blast out and it is renamed to Lava...
As a result,the ground starts to shake it is also like an earthquake that can give people that live near a volcano warnings that there is a volcano happening then there is a loud explosion which causes an ash cloud in the cloud.Occasionally, there are also phyroclastic flow that is thick acrid that comes out of the volcano before it irrupts...
Overall,volcanic eruptions are catastrophic events which can obliterate the enviroment and cause millions of people to die!
