Brackets are a type of parenthesis which is used for extra information.

Sam (the best gymnast in the world) did a backflip.

Dashes and hyphens look the same but are used differently. A dash is a type of parenthesis used to add information to the text e.g. John -who was 23- still worked at school with the other pupils. Hyphens are used to put two words together like names or words e.g. Emma-rose or ice-cream.

A semi-colon is used to link to main clauses together e.g. I like chocolate; I like cake.

An expanded noun phrase is used for when you're adding adjectives to a noun e.g.

This fantastic, gripping book I just read is over there.

Fronted adverbials are used to make your writing flow and when an adverbial phrase is moved to the the front e.g. During today's break-time, Tom scored a goal against Sally.

A subordinating conjunction is a conjunction from the ISAWAWABUB category e.g. wherever , once, while.

A co-ordinating conjunction is a conjunction from the FANBOYS category e.g. for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so.

A relative clause is a clause starting with who, where or more e.g. That man, who sells ice-cream, is called Rod.

Inverted commas are used for when someone is talking e.g. "My name is Ronald," said the clown.
