E-Safety

It is very important to stay safe on the Internet. Here are some tips so you can enjoy being on the Internet!

Stranger Danger

There are some very cruel people on the Internet, which is why you should never talk to strangers. Social media sites ( for example Facebook and Twitter) can be dangerous if you don't remember to stay away from strangers. On the other hand, it is okay if you know someone personally on these sites, for example your friend or family member.

In addition, many gaming sites like Minecraft have a feature where you can "friend request" people who play the game. Never "friend" strangers. Behind the screen, it could be someone totally different than what they tell you!

Pop-ups and Viruses

If you ever get an e-mail from someone you don't

know, delete it. For example, if you get an e-mail

from someone you don't know, it's very likely that it is a virus, and it may corrupt

your device and could cause very serious consequences, such as identity theft, (the crime of impersonating someone by using their private information) losing data, and could even make your computer slow or unusable! People who send e-mails like this are also called

scammers, and it is important you stay away from them.

Anti Virus apps

Another way to protect your device from viruses is to get an Anti Virus app such as Kaspersky Internet Security and Norton, as well as a firewall to protect you internet connection and make searching safe. Be careful though, some sites claim to protect your device but might have viruses on them.

Have a strong password

If you have any accounts that need passwords, like social media accounts, make sure that your password is strong. People could hack into your account if you don't. Strong passwords are usually more than 12 characters and they have a mixture of numbers, letters and symbols. However, if you use the same password for different accounts, it could become leaked and people could go into your other accounts. This is why you should never use the same password for multiple accounts. Passwords are like bubblegum, they are strongest when new, should only be used by one person, and if you leave it around, it'll create a sticky mess!

Use the right search engine

A search engine is something you use to browse the Internet, for example, Google Chrome. Make sure that you use a safe search engine and that your default browser is safe too. You could use Internet Explorer, Chrome, or FireFox.
