This Week

This week (although quite ordinary) was very special. It turned out to be book week - we read a book called 'Look Back!' and even had a visit from Matt Brown (An author).

Look Back! and Matt Brown

This book was set in Dominica. It was basically about a granny who told her grandson (who was named Christopher) a story about her past with Ti Bolom.

For Monday, our task was to draw what we thought Ti Bolom would look like. 'He had LONG LONG LONG and FLAT FLAT FLAT feet with big black eyes, he was very SHORT SHORT SHORT and he had a big head - He would creep behind others in the night and would disappear when you turned around (the capital letters and repetition is merely a quote from the book). We also learned that the teacher said 'Eh Quik!' we would say 'Eh Quack!' (like a duck), when the teacher said 'Pattaps!' we would stamp our feet four times and when the teacher said 'Bladdaps!' we would bang the table once (I could tell that everyone like doing the 'Pattaps!' and 'Bladdaps!' as most people did it much more times than they should have done - totally not including me). I imagined Ti Bolom as a short child who stole from other people in the night but many thought that he was an animal or a possessed demonic creature. Eh Quik! Eh Quack!

For Tuesday (although I can't remember thoroughly) I think we did acting after we read some more of the book (that might have actually been Wednesday). We learned that Young Granny (YG) had been sending food to Ma Constance (MC). On the way home she had been tripped up by Ti Bolom and was determined to catch him. Our English task (more like Drama actually) was to imagine and act out a scene where MC (Ma Constance) was trying to convince YG (Young Granny) to not walk by herself in the dark. Apparently the eldest was supposed to Ma Constance so naturally I was the old lady. We took a long time to practice but I was quite proud with me and Kavishan's results (Kavishan is my partner and acting is not my strong point). Eh Quik! Eh Quack!

For Wednesday (if I remember correctly) was when we wrote an instruction list to how to make Young Granny's trap (of course that last sentence wouldn't make sense if I hadn't told you what I had read so I will tell you right now). The part we had read was about Granny making a trap by digging and digging a hole then covering it with grass. Unfortunately for Granny it failed but it served good purpose for our task. A teacher in our school was going to use the papers as evidence of Book Week so we did our neatest handwriting. However, somehow Edison managed to spill water on his page so he had to start again. TvT Eh Quik! Eh Quack!

For Thursday (now I remember) was the Matt Brown visit. Matt Brown is the author of the Compton Valance books and is quite funny. He apparently hates Yr 6s which he said is why he spent time writing books where things were constantly trying to kill 10-11 year olds. He also talked about the names of his characters. He suggested that you should take your pet's name for the first and your street name for your surname (so if your pet's name was Lucy and you lived on Hampton road your character's name would be Lucy Hampton). He also told us that there was a very famous person called Edward Woodward. "Why does Edward Woodward's name have so many w's? Because otherwise his name would be Edar Doo Dar D! And why does his name have so many d's? Because otherwise his name would be E War Woo War!" he said (He actually named an alien character Edar Doo Dar D in one of his books). Eh Quik! Eh Quack!

For Friday it was Mufti day / Book day. You could dress up as a book character or dress in tropical clothes. Dinushan ended up being the (arguably) most tropical with his laua shirt and floppy sunhat (I however was hardly tropical even though I had tried my best). We wrote a review for the book 'Look Back!'. It was an okay book although I didn't like the ending (it was all a dream) but some people were being harsh. They started rating it half a star or no stars at all which made me feel very sad for the author (the book has beautiful illustrations). However because of the conclusion I ended up giving it three stars. Eh Quik! Eh Quack!
