Punishment for crime it could be very harsh in the Tudor period. For miner crime or punishment people might have to pay a fine. Criminals could be thrown into prison to wait for their trial and whatever punishment was decided. One of the worst prisons in London was Newgate where living condition for these poor prisoners were horrible. Prisoners had to pay their own bedding,heating and food so if they did not have enough money they really suffered. The Tower of London was a prison.

Portraits and paintings are very useful for showing us which clothes people wore in Tudor times but they often only depict whealthy people who could afford the most expensive clothes.

Archaeological excavation frenguently reveal the different types of clothing worn by ordinary Londoners. Archaeologist have found the shoe, buckles, leather jerkins, shoes, pins, headdress frames and laces that were part of everything Tudor clothing.
