THE

VIKING

LONG-SHIPS

The long-ships were the most valuable weapon

to the Vikings. It allowed them to travel around to other far away lands so they could steal and trade.

How they were built

Usually the ships were built beside rivers

for tests.

Materials

To make the keel they would cut a tall oak tree.

There were other Vikings who cut long planks of wood but mostly

short ones to support the ribs. The pegs were made out of wood and there were

iron rivets to fasten the wooden pieces together. The sails, which were built later, were usually made out of wool or linen. To stop water getting inbetween the wood they used

tar or hemp.

Tools and measurements

The vikings used their fingers to aproximate and used all different tools like:scrapers

and mallets and also wedges.

Sails and ores

The sailors pulled the ores when the ship was using its sail.

They covered the ore holes to stop the sea splashing in.
