Science Week

Last week Year 5 and 6 were put into mixed groups and had a carousel. There was a variety of activities in each classroom linked to arctic.

Activity 2

Another activity was to make a submarine and make our diver float inside a bottle by using a pen lid, paper clip and plastercine. This was very fun because we squeezed the bottle, our submaraine would pop up and down.

Activity 1

One of the activities was in the art room where we had to make a 3D arctic picture using crafts. Most of us created penguins and polar bears.

Activity 3

In Year 5 classroom, we were given an egg, two cups of water and two cups of salt to share between our table. We had to make the egg float by increasing the amount of salt but we had to keep the water clear by trying our best to not turn it white. We did this because we were trying to see what it would be like in the Dead Sea (the saltiest sea) where people can just lie in the water and not sink while reading the newspaper.

Activity 4

The next day in Year 6 classroom we were experimenting with butter and gloves to see how sea animals keep warm in Winter. This was due to the blubber underneath their skin. We had to put butter inside a glove with our hand inside while our other hand was normal. We found that the hand with no gloves on was colder in the water than the glove filled with butter.

Activity 5

In this session, we were in the hall designing boats out of recyclable materials. Most groups used plastic as it was light meaning it could float easily for the 30 seconds timer. It was funny because one of the boats (Jacob's group) was too big to fit in the bowl of water. There were 2 winners which were allowed to pick 2 sweets each for their success!!!
