Week 1 - Scarcity

During are first week of microsociety we were learning about scarcity and how some people have all the things they need like shelter and food whilst others don't. We learnt about the difference between a want list and a need list. Some people in different countries are weathier than others. In class, we were told a story about a planet called 'Just Enough'. We were told that the planet of just enough had just enough of everything until they threw a party one night. During the party the planet died because the people of just enough hadn't looked after it and they also ran out of most food because the trees had stopped growing all the food they needed. This is where scarcity comes in. We were asked, if this happened to us, who would the food go to. Some people thought that the people who could pay for the food could have it. Other people thought lots of different things. After the story, we each designed a flag that could be are class flag for the whole of microsociety and out of are tables we chose one flag to go into the vote with the whole class. My table chose Kajeeva's flag. The next day, we played a cool game about scarcity. Each group (I was in group E) got a packet full of things that we could use to earn points. In some of the packets, we got tokens which we could use trade with other groups or we could hand them to Miss Bond (who is my teacher) for five points. You could also get 5 points for making a perfect square that had sides 10cm long p or a perfect circle that is 10cm in diameter for 10 points. In my group's packet, we found a few pieces of papper and a pencil. We had 20 minites to get as many points as we could and my group spent the first 10 minites worring about how we were we were going to do it without a ruler! Suddenly, Jake said that he knew that the paper was 30cm long so we all decided to try and fold it in 3. We did it and in the end we got 10 points. I can't wait for the next microsociety lesson!
