Dun Karm Psaila

He was born in Haz-zebbug on 18th October 1871, and he died on 13th October 1961. He was a Maltese priest, writer, and poet . His mother and father both from Haz-zebbug and came from a family of farmers. Whilst his mother was a house wife, his father was a sailor, so Dun Karm could not spend a lot of time with him.


He went to the Bishop`s seminary, from where, at the age of 23, he became a priest. Besides being a priest, Dun Karm was also a very good and respected teacher. He also wrote poems , among these find "L-Innu ta` filghodu (Rega sebah) and "L-Innu ta` filghaxija (Riesaq il-lejl Mulejja) ".


But above all, he composed the Maltese national anthem "L-Innu Malti", a short poem in the form of a prayer. He also wrote a large number of beautiful and patriotic poems about our country. All this earned him to title of the Maltese National Poet.

Dun Mikiel Xerri

He was born on September 29, 1737 in Zebugg, and he died on January 17, 1799 in Valletta. He was a Maltese patriot. He was the son of Bartholomew Xerri and his wife Anne.


He was a very intelligent young man, and his parents did their best to give him a good education. He eventually left Malta`s shores to continue his studies at Various European Universities. He studied Philosophy and mathematics and eventually came home to Malta. After being ordained a priest, he gave his house in Zebbug to the poorest of the children of his hometown.


Dun Karm was a great person with a heart of gold. He died at the age of 61, he was killed by the French people , and before they killed him he gave his silver pocket watch to one of the officals on duty and asked to be shot through the heart. His cry, before being shot, was "Lord have mercy on us ! Viva Malta!"
