Day 10

This morning one of the caterpillars has turned into a cocoon. The other three are still hanging upsidedown in a J shape and the smallest one is still eating the food!

Day 11

Four of the caterpillars are now in their cocoons (one has fallen off but he will still grow). They are green like leaves and would be well camouflaged in the wild. The remaining one is still eating as he was smaller than the others so he needs to catch up!

Day 14

The smallest caterpillar is hanging upside down in a j shape getting ready to make his cocoon. The other four cocoons are getting harder and getting lighter in colour. Once they are all in their cocoons we can move them to their net habitat.

Day 18

We put them in their net habitat yesterday and I woke up this morning to find one of the butterflies have hatched! It was very crumpled to start with but it pumped the blood into its wings and they straightened out and we could see its markings. Then at lunchtime the second one hatched and mum recorded it on her phone for me.

We have been feeding the

butterflies oranges, bananas

and apple as they drink the sugars from the fruit. Now all five butterflies have hatched.we will look after them for the next two days and then let them go outside.

Day 22

Today I released all five butterflies they were all excited three flew away straight away and the other two waited a while on the grass and then flew off.
