The Circulatory System

How is blood pumped around the body?

The heart is a muscle, it is used to keep blood pumping around your body. The heart is a strong muscle which has four chambers, the two upper chambers and the two lower chambers. Firstly, the blood travels through the upper chamber while the heart pumps it to the lower chamber which circulates around the body.

The tubes that carry the blood away from the heart are called arteries. The other long tubes are called veins. They help push the blood back to the heart again for the process to carry on. The flow of blood is controlled by valves which is why you are able to hear your heart beating.
