Theodore Roosevelt

Theodore Roosevelt, or Teddy Roosevelt, was the 26th US president, he was also a great war hero, the 33rd governor of New York and he was a naval commander. He was born on the 27th of October 1858 in New York. He was a 'sickly' child with debilitating asthma, which he grew out of in early adulthood.

Early Life

When he was young he had very bad asthma but he grew out of this helped by his healthy

lifestyle, he did lots of exercise to try and make himself as healthy as possible. He had a larger than life personality and many interests. He went to Harvard University. He was interested in nature and wrote a book on Naval warfare.

He served in the army between 1882 and 1898 and was a commander. He was a war hero because

he joined the volunteer cavalry in the only regiment that saw action –the “Rough Riders.”

He was governor of new York in 1898 and then vice president the following year.


Presidency


He was a republican president from 14th Sep 1901 to 4th of March 1909. He is still the youngest person to become president of the United States at the age of 42.

Because he was interested in nature he was a conservationist and he set up many new national

parks. He began the construction of the Panama canal. He won a Nobel peace prize in 1906 for helping to bring about the end of the Russian-Japanese war.

After his presidency, Roosevelt led a two-year expedition to the Amazon basin where he nearly died of tropical disease. During World War I, he wanted America to help with the war against Germany, and even offered to lead volunteers to France but this was rejected.


Legacy


Americans considered him such an important president that they had his face carved into Mount Rushmore,along with George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln.
