ATTCK OF THE VIKINGS

Soon after the Vikings arrived in England they found a monastery. Since the monasteries did not haveany value to the Vikings and there religion they burnt them down and cut down the munks who lived and worshipped inside it. The first monastery they burnt down was called Lindisfarne. In those times monasteries were made out of wood therefore the Vikings easily burnt the monastery to ash. The attack on the monastery made the people of England scared of the Vikings. The land where the Vikings burnt their forst monastery was considered still holy so 400 years later they decided to made monasteries out of stone as they respected monks. The first monastrey in England was made by the second king of Northumbria when he turned to Christianity. This was why monks would be respected and well-treated by the locals. An example is that the locals would have given gifts to the munks. The island where Lindisfarne was burnt is now called Holy land/Holy island in memory of all the munks who died in the devastating attack from the Vikings.
