Do you know your words and punctuation?

Adjectives?

Adjectives are words

that describe nouns

(naming words). Adjectives

can also be numbers. For example:

There were five very big planes.

Nouns?

Nouns are naming words.

They can be a person, place, thing or feeling. A proper noun is a word that needs a capital letter at the start, for example: London. A common noun is just something that doesn't need a capital letter and it is a thing or object, for example: table. An abstract noun is a feeling, for example: happiness. A collective noun is a group of something, for example: herd.

Verbs?

Verbs are action words

(also known as doing words),

for example: The boy ran

to the shops.

Articles?

An article is a kind of

an adjective that gives

some information about a

noun. There are only 3

articles which are: a, an

and the. For example: Tom

bought a grape, an apple

and mentos which are in

his opinion the best sweets

in the world.

Homophones?

Homophones are words that

have a different meaning, sound

the same and sometimes are

spelt differently. For example:

They're looking for their shoes

which are over there.

Colons (:) and Semi Colons (;)?

Colons (:) are used to show nouns in

a list or used to show an expansion

or explanation in a sentence. For

example: Bob has experimented and

found out that: some animals hibernate.

John went to the shops and bought lots

of different thing like: tomatoes,

grapes, bacon and chicken. Using a semi colon (;) is just like saying 'and here is some more information about that.' For example: Charlie slipped over; he was hurt.

Active and Passive voice?

Active voice is when the subject

is doing the verb to the noun. For

example: The dog bit the man.

Passive voice is when the noun

is having something done to it by the

subject so it kind of swaps around.

For example: The man was bitten by

the dog.

Full stops (.) commas (,) and exclamation marks (!)? Full stops show the end of a sentence. For example: Megan likes cheese. Commas (also known as breaks) show pauses in a sentence or can be used to seperate things into a list. For example: Jake likes alot of cheeses and his favourites are Chedder, Blue cheese and parmasan. Sam, who likes pizza, loves to cycle on his bike. Exclamation marks are used in speech to show that someone or something is shouting. For example: "Don't do that!"

Speech Marks (")?

Speech marks (also known

as inverted commas) show

that someone or something

is speaking. For example:

"Hello, my name is Jeff it is

nice to meet you."

Question marks (?)?

Question marks show that

someone or something is

asking a question. For

example: "Dave, how deep

is the ocean?"
