Viking Long Ship

The Viking Long Ships were made out of oak wood planks built together to make a full boat. Vikings usually sail close to the coast watching for landmarks. You can see two Viking Long Ships in a museum in Oslo, in Norway. The Vikings built fast ships for raiding in war. A big Long Ship would be about 30 metres long and could carry about 60 men. A Viking ship had large, square sail made wool. They were personalized and they used the top bit with a dragon head or any circular object to scare away enemies. The whole boat was slender and flexible. The Vikings ships had to be big to fit lots of people on and because they had to be fast ships. Vikings took weeks on their boats to sail to the countries they attacked.
