Sexism & Stereotypes
Sexism can affect everyone. Many people make stereotypes like:
*All girls like the colour pink
*football is a manly sport
*Boys are smarter than girls
are extremely offensive.Ever since humans have roamed the Earth sexism has lingered around as well. But not just in England...worldwide in fact. And we need to put an end to it.
The Suffragettes
This feminist rebellion began in the late 19th & 20th century. This is because back then women were not allowed the vote.At first they resorted to a peaceful rebellion...but were prepared to turn to violence. That started in 1905 when Christabel Pankhurst & Annie Kenney interrupted a meeting in Manchester to ask 2 Liberal politicians- Winston Churchill & Sir Edward Grey if women should have the right to vote. Neither answered. Both the ladies pulled out a banner saying "Vote For Women". They were thrown out and arrested but they preferred to go to prison then pay a fine. They wreaked havoc and chaos where ever they could in London:
*They burned down churches
*vandalise Oxford
*chained themselves to Buckingham Palace
*hired boats to shout abuse on the River Thames;and
*refused to pay tax
Emmeline Pankhurst, in her autobiography, wrote " this was the beginning of a campaign the like of which was never known in England, or for that matter in any other country...we interrupted a great many meetings...and we were violently thrown out and insulted. Often we were painfully bruised and hurt."
