William Shakespeare was an English poet, playwright and actor, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. He is often called England's national poet, and the 'Bard of Avon'.

His plays include Hamlet, Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Nights Dream and Othello.

When his plays were first performed, audiences crammed into the playhouses to see them. They were generally well received, though each play gave rise to different issues which may or may not have affected different members of the audience. While Elizabeth I and James I are recorded as having watched his plays, Shakespeare found criticism from groups such as the Puritans. The Puritans did not believe in theatre as entertainment.

Some of Shakespeare's famous and well known quotes are:

'Be not afraid of greatness; some are born great, some achieve greatness and some have greatness thrust upon them.'

'The course of true love never did run smooth.'
