Food in Tudor times? What was it like?

Have you ever wondered what food was like in Tudor times? Well food was cooked on an open fire,

and they also ate lots of fresh food

as there was no way of storing it,

(fridges and freezers didn't exist)

but like today people did use herbs

in cooking. Which they picked from

a herb garden before cooking it. They

ate with fingers, knifes, and spoons

(no such thing as forks) would you like

What did the rich eat?

The rich Tudors had a diet made up of roughly 75% of meat such as deer, badger and wild boar. They also enjoyed eating lots of sugary treats, which would have been prepared by servants. They had much nicer bread than the poor as their bread was made of white of wholemeal flour. The rich Tudors also ate birds such as peacocks, blackbirds and swans. But what about the poor? what did they eat?

What did the poor eat?

Poor Tudors ate a soup called pottage,

which was made from peas, milk,

egg yolks, bread crumbs and parsley, flavoured with saffron and ginger and

served with bread. The bread was not

as nice a the riches, as the poor ate bread made of rye and even ground acorns.
