Matisse Class Chick Diary

Day 3 Thursday 18th June 2015

This morning when we came into school we got a big surprise! The incubator looked very different from how we left it. Before it was full of eggs, but this morning we found it full of chicks! 10 chicks to be precise! And they kept on coming!

We were lucky enough to watch four more hatch. It was amazing to see them push their way out of their shells. When they first come out they are wet and exhausted from all their hard work. Their heads sink to the ground and they try to fall straight asleep but their other chicky friends keep climbing over them and waking them up. It's a tough life for a new born chick!

The chicks look really squashed in their incubator but they love to be all together! It is best for them to stay in their until they are properly dried out.

One chick that hatched today had a little bit of blood on it when he first came out and struggled to stand for a long time. We were worried that he might not make it but he was looking stronger at home time so we are hopeful that he will be ok.

Just before home time we decided to transfer the chicks that were ready into a brooder box. They seem very happy in their new home.

We started learning a new song today for our carnival performance and the chicks seemed to enjoy it! They looked like they were dancing!
