George V of England, son of Edward VII, came to the throne in 1910. He was the second son of Edward VII, his elder brother Albert was 17 months older, and although he was very different from his father, they got on very well. George Fredrick Ernest Albert was born on 3rd June 1865 and when he was 12 years old he joined the navy with Albert.

After a tour around the world, Albert went to college while George continued with the navy, he went on many ships and voyages with his Uncle Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh.

On 14th January 1892 Albert died of pneumonia leaving George second in line for the throne. After recovering from typhoid fever, which is the disease likely to have killed his Grandfather Prince Albert, George grew close to Albert's fiancee,Princess Victoria Mary of Teck, known as 'May' with the family,and they were married on 6th July 1893.When Albert died, George left the navy as he was likely to succeed his father now.

George had 5 sons and a daughter; Edward VII, Albert (aka George VI), Mary Princess Royal and Countess of Harewood, Prince Henry Duke of Gloucester, Prince George Duke of Kent and Prince John of the United Kingdom (died aged 13). Albert Fredrick Arthur George, second son of George V, succeeded him, he was known George VI.

In Europe, in the time of World War 1, many rulers were related by family ties to Queen Victoria. King George V of England,Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany and Nicholas Tsar II of Russia were all cousins. Another royal was Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to his Uncle's throne of Austria, before he was assassinated in Sarajevo.
