Mother Teresa of Kolkata

Mother Teresa helped many people. She cared for the sick, poor, hungry and homeless. Here is my biography about all the wonderful things she achieved.

Mother Teresa was born Agnes Bojaxhiu on 26 August 1910 in what is now Macedonia, to an Albanian family. Her father died when she was eight and she was raised by her mother. Her mother would invite the poorest people to dinner to feed them and share the family's food. Agnes loved stories of missionaries, and by the age of 12 had decided to lead a religious life.

Agnes became a nun at 18 and went to Ireland to study, joining the Sisters of Loreto. She took the name Teresa, after St Thérèse of Lisieux, and learned English. She was then sent to Darjeeling, India. She took her vows in 1931, becoming a teacher in Kolkata (Calcutta) at the Sister's school for poor girls. She learned Hindi and Bengali. In time she became headmistress.
