Fossil Fact file!
There are four main types of fossils, all formed in a different way, which are conducive to preserving different types of organisms. These are mold fossils, cast fossils, trace fossils and true form fossils.
Types Of Fossils
- Body Fossils.
- Molecular Fossils.
- Trace Fossils.
- Carbon Fossils.
- Pseudo fossils.
This is a body Fossil, the picture is
a duck, in body fossils you usually have
dinosaurs, ducks and more types of
animals
This is a carbon Fossil, the
picture is a fish
This is a Molecular fossil
This is a Trace Fossil, the picture
has dinosaur footsteps, it has footsteps
of animals
This is a Pseudo Fossil
Fossils: Facts
- Fossils represent the remains or traces of once-living organisms.
- Most fossils are the remains of extinct organisms — that is, they belong to plants or animals that are no longer living anywhere on Earth.
- The kinds of fossils found in rocks of different ages differ because life on Earth has changed through time.
What are fossils made of?
Paleontology. Paleontology is the study of the history of life on Earth as based on fossils. Fossils are the remains of plants, animals, fungi, bacteria, and single-celled living things that have been replaced by rock material or impressions of organisms preserved in rock
Where are fossils found?
Fossils are mostly found where sedimentary rocks of the right age – which for dinosaurs is the Mesozoic – are exposed. The best places are river valleys, cliffs and hillsides, and human-made exposures such as quarries and road cuttings.
