I decided to make mock fish, this version was my great grandma's version of this well known wartime recipe. In my mum's Wartime Farm book they explain that fish was scarce during the war because a lot of fishermen had joined the navy and a lot of the seas around Britain were blocked to fishing boats.

Recipe

5 oz of mashed potato

Splash of milk

Half an onion

1 egg

Breadcrumbs

I mixed the mashed potato with the chopped onion and the splash of milk. On a board I shaped the mixture into a fish shape. Next I brushed it with beaten egg and then covered it in breadcrumbs. Finally I fried it in a little oil and cooked it until it was golden brown.

You can add anchovy oil to give it a fishy taste, but we don't really like fish so we left this out.

I really enjoyed this as did my mum, I was surprised I liked the onion and it was really filling.
