* Diwali is the most famous and largely celebrated holiday in India as it marks the Hindu New Year on the 23rd of October, lasting for 5 days
* The 5 days of Diwali include:
Day 1: On the first day, the ‘Spring clean’ takes place

Day 2: Decorations begin to take place with lamps/diyas being placed all around the newly cleaned home.
.Day 3: The third and main day of the holiday. Families gather to pray to the Goddess Lakshmi, before a mouth-watering feast and fireworks.
.Day 4: The start of the Hindu New Year. Friends and family gather to exchange gifts and best wishes for the New Year that is upon them.
Day 5: On the final day if Diwali, brothers visit sisters where they are greeted with love and an extravagant meal.
How long does it last?
Why do they celebrate Diwali
We celebrate Diwali because of the story. There was Prince Rama ,Sita ,King Ravana and monkey king Hanuman. The story goes that King Ravana takes Sita. Then Rama and the monkey searches for Sita. They found Sita on a island. They had to make a large bridge.. After they made the bridge they went to the island and found Sita. Then Rama kills King Ravana. Next Rama and Sita go home with lights to lead them the way.
What do they eat?
During Diwali, the most popular food is mithai. Mithai is a combination of a snack, a dessert and a sweet, and it is eaten throughout the Diwali festival. Other favorite dishes include Dahi-Bhalle, Karanji, Samosas, Pakoray, Mathiyaa, Ghathiya and Aloo Tikki.
What do they wear?
Special clothing that brings out inner light is traditionally worn for the Hindu festival of lights called Diwali. Men, women, young people and children make use of the opportunity to buy bright, ethnic clothing.
What events do they have?
During Diwali they often have fireworks, dancing, earthen diyas candles and colourful pattern pictures.
The presenters highlight the important traditional customs connected to the Hindu Festival of Light, Diwali, which marks the return of Lord Rama. We see families painting Rangoli patterns on their doorstep and placing candles around the home. A group of female dancers in traditional dress perform a stick dance and teach a sequence of moves accompanied by sticks and drumming
