Viking Longships

The Vikings built extremely useful ships, these were called 'Longships'. They were used for raiding, trade and war.Because of being able to sail in very shallow water the Vikings travelled across many different seas and countries such as ; England, Scotland , Ireland , France and other countries all the way to Russia.

How were longships built?

Vikings did not use measurements they just used they're eyes to estimate the approximate measurements.

Materials

A Viking longship was built with a head of an animal often a dragon or a dog, mainly to scare the others.Materials included wool or linen-to make the sail

wood- to make the main boat structure of the boat

Iron nails- used as rivets and carvers to carve the side of the boat.

They would often calve patterns on the side of the boat.

Features

Many seats would be used inside the boat and a square shaped sail usually striped. Oars were very important as well as ribs in the boat.

Viking Longships were truly helpful to the Vikings. They would not have been anywhere as successful as they were.
