Trenches

Home

Trenches were used in WW1 and WW2. A trench is an open tunnel where soldiers used to take cover so they don't get shot by the enemy. The trenches were very long and it was dirty. Also, it was filled with rats. There were many lines of German trenches on one side and many lines of Allied trenches on the other. In the middle of the trenches was no-mans-land. It was called this because it did not belong to either army. It was about 400 miles long.

Instead of it being a field of flowers and farmland, it was a muddy and cold ditch, full of death and horror. Many died in the trenches but some soldiers did survive. Soldiers who

had loved ones wrote letters to

them so they knew that they were okay.

Soldiers also did not have a lot of food or sleep which are one of the main recorces in life. They would be lucky to have even a couple of ours of sleep, but most of the time they were battling out the enemy. One strategy that soldiers used in the trenches was to dig towards the enemy and sometimes they used to meet up!
