Sir Francis Drake and other British sailors had been stealing treasure from Spanish ships, and when Queen Elizabeth 1st did not punish them King Philip 2nd decided to invade England.

Spain was catholic and the king felt that he needed to force protestant Britain to become a country catholic.

The 2 Navy's met on the 6th of August 1588 in the English Channel , the English Navy was much smaller than the Spanish Armada.

The English sent 80 burning ships into the Spanish which broke up their battle winning

crescent formation and a strong Northerly wind carried many ships to the coast of

Ireland were they crashed into many rocks.

Out of 138 Spanish ships only 56 returned to Spain.
