Chinese New Year

Happy Chinese New Year!!! On the 25th of January

2020 Chinese New Year was celebrated. The date of this auspicious event changes every year. This changes according to the moon but it will always occur between

21st January and 20th February.

What do people do on Chinese New Year?

Firstly, people put up decorations. They try to base it

around the colour red as it is assumed to be an auspicious colour. One of the most common decorations is Chinese lanterns. Most public decoration is done a month before but home decoration is traditionally done on Chinese New Year’s eve. As 2020 is the year of the rat, decorations related to rats will be commonly seen. The Chinese New Year's Eve dinner is called 'reunion dinner', and is believed to be the most important meal of the year. After the scrumptious dinner, families normally sit together to watch the Spring Festival Gala, one of the most watched TV shows in China. People also send red envelopes to each other which normally contain a message with money or a present.

Chinese zodiac signs

Chinese zodiac signs are usually just thought to show what animal you are but they actually take a key role in Chinese New Year. The decorations are based around the animal of the year.  Here’s a link to show the story of how the Chinese zodiac signs were created.
