My passion project is about dogs. Dogs are often called a mans best friend as
they are one of the most popular animals that we have as pets. Dogs are great fun, and good company. My first dog was a labradoodle, who’s name was Shadow. Sadly, he died when I was 8. Shortly after, we brought a new puppy, who we named Sadie. Sadie is a Samoyed. When my mum was younger, she had a boarder Collie named Ted and my dad had a Rottweiler named Bruno.
Dogs have been kept as pets for thousands of years. There is an archaeological record which shows evidence that dog remains were buried beside humans 14,700 years ago, which suggest a close bond. It isn’t surprising as dogs are quite often used for hunting rabbits, game and herding. They are also used in cold countries (like Alaska) for pulling sledges, and the police use dogs to help tackle crime.
Most dogs live up to about the age of 12. It is often said that there is 7 dog years to our 1. The oldest living dog (Pusuke) lived until they were 26yrs and 9months, which would of made them over 182yrs old in human years! Imagine that.
There are over 339 different breeds of dogs, and new breeds are being created every year. Shadow, my Labradoddle, was a poddle and Labrador cross. Although, most cross breeds are not recognised as a pure breed, but they are very popular with dog owners.
SUMMARY
LABRADOODLES
Australian breeder, Wally Conron, crossed a Labrador Retriever and Standard Poodle. His idea was to create a guide dog, that didn’t shed hair, which would be easier for blind people to look after, and benefit those with dog allergies. Sadly, this wasn’t the case as Labradoodles do shed, although some only shed a few hairs compared to the Labrador Retriever, which still makes them easier dogs to groom.
Labradoodles can be black, brown or white. They are very intelligent dogs and are often found in a working environment, but they are more suited to being a family dog, as they love children.
Labradoodles are high energy dogs, who need a lot of exercise.
They are very social dogs and will greet everyone as their friend.
Labradoodles live to around 13yrs, and they don’t have many known health problems.
SAMOYEDS
Samoyeds are a breed of dog from the spitz group. They have a thick, white, double-layer coat. They are named after the Samoyedic, people of Siberia. The samoyedic people are often reindeer herders and they breed these dogs to help with the herding, and to pull sledges.
The Samoyedic people also use the dogs fur to make warm clothing and blankets, to help keep them warm.
Samoyeds are also known for there smile which is called a Sammie smile.
Samoyeds are a intelligent, gentle, and loyal dog. They are friendly and affectionate with their family, they are good children.
Samoyeds are high energy dogs so they enjoy being part of a active family. Samoyeds do need a lot of grooming because they have two coats. They have a straight outer coat and a soft, thick undercoat which is similar to wool. Samoyeds are white but can be a biscuit colour and both coats shed heavily.Daily brushing Is necessary when the coat is shedding, and once or twice a week when it's not.
Samoyeds live for around 12 years.
Border Collies
Border Collies are a working dog breed. They were developed in the Anglo Scottish region for herding livestock, especially sheep. It was specifically bred for dog to have both intelligence and obedience. Because they are highly intelligent, energetic, and athletic, they are quite often used to compete in dog trials in rural areas.
They are often seen as the most intelligent breed of all domestic dogs, and are still widely used on farms all over the world.
Border Collies are good family dogs, and are very social.Border Collies don’t shed a lot/ so grooming is easy.
The most common colour of Border Collies are black and white, but some are brown and white.
Border Collies live to around 12 years and don’t have many health problems.
ROTTWEILERS
The Rottweiler is a breed of do/g which were known in German as Rottweiler Metzgerhund, meaning rottweil Butcher dogs, this is because their main use was to heard livestock and to pull carts that had with butchered meat on them to market.
When railways were laid in the mid 19th century/ Rottweilers were no longer used for pulling carts, but they are still used to herd stock in many parts of the world, Rottweilers are also used as guard dogs, police dogs and in some countries as guide dogs.
Rottweilers are often known as ‘Rotties’ and they are very calm, confident and courageous dogs. They are very protective of their families, and although they make good family dogs they should be watched with small children due to the size of the Rottweiler, they can quite easily knock over a small child by accident.
