1. A giant panda is a type of bear.
2. Bamboo is 99% of a pandas diet.
3. Today, there are approximately
4. Every day, pandas eat up to
12 kgs of bamboo every day-in 12 hours!
5. Aliuropoda Metanoleuca is the giant
panda's scientific name-which means black and white cat foot.
6. When pandas are born, they are pink
and are 15cm-that's about the size of a pencil!
7. When pandas are born, they are blind and only
open their eyes between 6-8 weeks.
8. Every 2 years, female pandas give birth to 1 or 2 cubs.
9. After 18 months, cubs leave their parents and go off
on their own. (Humans take at least 18 years!)
10. Unlike other bears, pandas do not hibernate.
Types of pandas
There are a few different
types of pandas that you
can find. One of them look
really different to the
traditional panda which is
black and white. The red panda, which is quite small,
has a long tail and black
legs.
Here are some of the different types:
1. Giant panda
2. Red panda.
3. Quinling panda
Panda habitats
Pandas live in three different types of forests.
They live in the Bamboo forest, the Tropical
Broadleaf Evergreen forest ; the Temperate
Broadleaf Decidous forest.
One million giant pandas share their habitat
with over one million people, living in nearly
200 towns.
I think Pandas in the wild always live near water as
the bamboo might not grow.
Here is my drawing of a forest:
Panda playtime
Excitable, playful pandas, who don't always roam about in the wild, can
have fun like these pandas seen in the video: (press view in the left hand
corner to watch.)
As you can see pandas can play just as well as us. But
they don't just have to play with equipment, they can
play without it. Here is a photo of three pandas
playing together
Pandas can also play by themselves as seen in this
photo. This baby panda, who is playing in the snow,
is acting a bit like a cat as it is chasing it's tail.

Panda conservation
Did you know that there are only 1,600 pandas living in the wild? To make sure that pandas do not become extinct, there are captive breeding programmes in zoos all around the world. Since 1999, zoos in Japan, Austria, Mexico ,Spain, Thailand and USA have raised forty-two cubs have been raised! That's a lot.
Here are some of the names of zoo pandas:
Chi Chi, Ling Ling, Xin Xin, Su Lin and
Ming Ming.
Chi Chi the panda
In may, 1955, Chi Chi was caught in Baoxing, Sichuan and in June, moved to Beijing zoo.
In May 1958, Chi Chi was brought to Moscow zoo, in a trade.
In 1958, Chi Chi was brought to London zoo.
Thank you for reading my project.
