Grandpa’s Great Escape –David Walliams

Jack’s Grandfather used to be a royal airforce pilot. But he has a memory problem, which makes him think he is still inthe war, and every now and then he goes missing from home. Many times he is found on top of the church roof. Only his grandson Jack can understand him because he grew up hearing stories about the war from his Grandpa, and had to speak to him as if they were still fighting together in the war.

One night his grandpa went missing again and they couldn’t find him anywhere, not even on the church roof looking out for enemy flyers. It had been two weeks since they had seen him, and one day Jack’s class went on a school trip to the Imperial War Museum. When they were looking at the planes Jack heard some loud snoring and then saw his Grandpa! He climbed up to the plane and his grandpa woke up. They tried to get down but the security guard held on to Jack’s foot, and Jack held on to his Grandpa’s leg, who held on to the side of the plane and the string holding it up. When he couldn’t hold no any more they all crashed down in a pile including the plane. Luckily no one was hurt.

Jack and his Grandpa were taken to Scotland Yard to be interrogated. When Jack’s parents arrived to collect them, they were told that the pair had escaped! When they are found, Grandpa is put in a horrible new old unwanted folks home, which he hates, and thinks is an enemy prison. Every night they give him lots of sleeping powder, which he hates. Instead of swallowing it, he hides it in his splendid moustache.

One night Jack climbs over the fence to find Grandpa, and is asked to bring in lots of smarties to swap for the sleeping pills in the medicine jars. When the staff think all the old people are asleep and leave, Grandpa and his friends escape through a hatch in the roof and burn down the whole home.

This book hooked me from start to end whilst I read it in the plane laughing lots.
