VE Day!




VE Day stands for victory in Europe day. It took place on the 8th of May 1945. It was a public holiday to mark the the defeat of Germany by the Allied forces in world war II.




At 21:00 , king George VI made a final broadcast to

the nation. Buckingham palace was lit up in

floodlights for the first time since the start of the war, and

two searchlights formed a V sign of peace above St Pauls

Cathedral in London.





People ran out on the streets hanging bunting and banners

and dancing. People organised unplanned street parties,

shared rationed food with the neighbours and listend to

wireless updates.
