The Lindisfarne Monastery

Era: Viking

Year: 793 AD

Location:

Facts: Lindisfarne is a small island off the coast of England. It was one of the first places were the Vikings landed. In its time, it was a very famous Christian Monastery, with lots of money. So the Vikings decided to come there and kill all the monks in the monastery, bringing it down to. But that does not mean that all Vikings were blood-thirsty bully's! Some Vikings were good, some were bad.

The monastery itself was a place were monks learned to read and write, when the majority of others could. The monks would pray, and help the other people in the village. The monks would also write the bible and other holy books. The Viking's attack made the Saxons think that they much, much more terrible than they already were. The Vikings actually attacked because Scandinavia - where they came from - was a harsh place at the time. So the Vikings came for better farmland and many other reasons.
