Moving to Year 5 Summer Learning Project

Space Themed Summer Project

To get you ready to start our 'Stargazers' topic in September, it would be great if you could complete a Space Themed Project. You can present the project in any way that you wish e.g a book, a blog, a poster. You don’t have to include all of the following and you can add different things, but here are some ideas of what you could research and present as part of your project:

* Who was the first man on the moon? Create a fact page about him.

* Use the attached sheet to keep a Moon diary over the course of a month. Draw the shape of the Moon each night, finding out and recording the correct term for each phase.

*Use non-fiction books, astronomy magazines and the web to find and record amazing facts about space. Create a space scrapbook using your facts and downloaded images.

* So far, 24 astronauts have visited the Moon. Find out their names, download pictures and record interesting facts about them.

*Visit your local library and search for space-themed books. These could be nonfiction, novels or poetry books. Write a review of your favourite to display in the library or school.

*Imagine that an alien space ship has crash landed in your back garden. Write a story about what happens next. You may want to borrow ideas from space stories or films you know well. Remember to use powerful vocabulary to bring your story (and your alien) to life!

* Design your own spacesuit for Tim Peake’s next mission (use the attached sheet).

* Write a film review of a space-themed film that you have watched with your family. Some great films to choose might be Wall-E (U), ET (U), Star Wars (PG) or Apollo 13 (PG). How many ‘stars’ would you award your film?

* Create a mnemonic to remember the order of the planets in the Solar System. Then teach your family it and test them! Have they remembered correctly?
