Birds

There are nearly 9000 species of birds in the world.

Birds mostly eat seeds, fruits and insects. Flight has

enabled birds to travel huge distances in search of

new territories. A bird takes 21 days to hatch from

its egg. Not all birds build nests. Some species

lay eggs on the ground.

The anatomy of birds varies from one

species to another according to their natural lifestyle.

Examples:

Cross bills have short, stout beaks for eating

seeds but the swift has a very wide beak for

catching flying insects.

Invertebrates

Termites

Termites can bite through wood.

A queen termite can lay more than

10,000 eggs a day. There are

three different types of termites;

the queen termite, the worker termite

and the soldier termite. The soldier termites

are armed with a huge set of jaws which help them to

to defend the mound from attackers.

The worker termite gathers wood which is

the main food of termites.
