Trenches

Trenches were pit-like tunnels where soldiers at the Western Front lived. They were often filled with water and deep mud. The conditions were terrible and it was a struggle to survive in them.

What the Trenches were like

The trenches of the Western Front crossed Belgium and France for a distance of 460 miles. The Front trench was about 3 feet wide and 7 feet high and about 30 yards from the enemy trenches. To enable the soldiers to fire over the parapet (a protective wall made of sandbags) a fire-step was built 2 feet high. This was also used to keep watch.
