Golden slices were used in WW2 as people had to ration their food.

Stale or dry bread

Margarine

2 eggs

Dessert spoon Orange juice

Sugar (optional)

What to do:

1. Wash your hands

2. Cut the bread into 1/2 inch squares.

3. Get your bowl and crack the 2 eggs carefully.

4. Whisk the eggs with the fork.

5. Use the grater to grate the peel off the orange and lemon, and add to the egg.

6. Using the dessert spoon pour orange juice slowly onto the spoon and add to the bowl.

7. Take your bread pieces that you cut earlier and add them into the bowl and soak them.

8. Heat your frying pan and add a spoonful of margarine

9. Add the bread onto the frying pan and cook until brown on both sides.

10. Once cooked sugar can be added, eat hot.

Golden slices are very easy to make, very fun and a great treat for everyone. I shared mine with my mum, my friend and her mum. We really enjoyed them and I would make them again.

We found the recipe on the Cookit website, under History Cookbook, World War 2.

This is how mine turned out.
