Plants

Parts of a plant:

Root - take up water and nutrients from the soil. The roots also keep the plants stead and upright in the soil; they "anchor" the plant.

Stem - carries water and nutrients to different parts of the plant.

Leaf - uses light from the sun, along with carbon dioxide from the air and water to make food for the plant. This process is called photosynthesis.

Flower - a major food source for insects, humans, birds and other animals.

What a plant needs:

Air - so the plant can breathe.

Light - a plant kept in the dark will grow spindly in search of light and then become weak and die.

Warmth - a seed needs warmth to grow into a healthy plant.

Water - to help the plant grow strong. Without water the plant will die.

Nutrients - to help the plant survive and grow.
