Impressionism was started in Paris when a group of people in the nineteenth century began painting in a bold new way. Critics were appalled with the sketchy paintings and said they looked like mere 'impressions', thus giving the impressionists their name.

THE WATER LILY POND

This painting was done by Claude-Oscar Monet and is very famous. Claude is a well known artist and many of his masterpieces are based on his own garden. The painting is of a bridge over a pond of water lilies backed by lush trees and bushes. The colours are bright and cheerful.

BOULEVARD MONTMARTRE AT NIGHT

Painted by Camille Pissarro , this piece of work is dark and eerie to give the idea of a street in the night. The painting seems blured and the people are made from dabs of paint. Camille was against the old paintings he saw in the gallery and once said ''I want to burn down the Louvre!''

THE LANE OF POPLARS AT MORET

Alfred Sisley did this piece and it is of some trees boarding a narrow path with a couple of people walking along it. Light and joyful, there is also a lake running alongside it but it is hard to notice. Although it has always been recovered, this painting has been stolen three times.
