The Spanish Armada

On May 1588, King Philip the IInd of Spain wanted to start the Spanish Armada because Queen Elizabeth the 1st did not punish Sir Francis Drake and others for plundering Spanish ships.

It took place in the English channel. More than 130 huge Spanish ships sailed from Lisbon towards the English coastline ready to attack.

The English felt scared, anxious and petrified because the Spanish Armada was the most fearsome, most powerful navy in the whole wide world.

The Spanish Armada approached the English coastline like a cunning fox. However, the English had a few clever tactics up their sleeves to destroy the Spanish. They set fire to approximately 80 of their own ships to scare away the Spanish Armada and knew that they would turn around and then be sent into a cul-de-sac ready for capture.

After that, mother nature intervened and helped the English by blowing the Spanish ships onto hard rocks demolishing their boats. It was a ferocious, windy, gloomy, gale and the Spanish couldn't see anything at all because the sky was as dark as ink.

It ended 3 months after it all started in July 1588, because the Spanish had lost too many of their ships and sailors and were no longer powerful enough to fight the English back.
