Year of Mercy Candle comes to Sacred Heart

In April 2015, Pope Francis proclaimed an ‘Extraordinary Jubilee Year’ i.e. one in addition to the usual 50 or 25 year cycle, and it has ‘Mercy’ as its focus.

It started on the 8th December 2015 and continues until Sunday 20th November 2016.

The Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy is an invitation to all Christians to draw closer to Jesus who is “the face of the Father’s mercy”.

We are called in many ways throughout this holy year to experience God’s mercy. By drawing closer to God in prayer and through undertaking acts of mercy, we hope to share God’s transforming love with every person and creature, especially those who are living in poverty.

Sacred Heart is a part of the MORTLAKE Deanery which covers Barnes, East Sheen, Ham, Kew, Mortlake, Putney, Richmond, Roehampton, Wimbledon Common.

The Catholic Diocese of Southwark have given each Deanery a Year of Mercy Candle to share throughout the Jubilee Year.  Pupils from Our Lady Queen of Heaven School visited us today to give us the candle.

The Year of Mercy candle is a symbol of the Christ Our Lord who brings his light to the world.
