Building paper terminals

On Monday 28 th September some engineers from Heathrow came to help us to build paper terminals, human size “would you believe”. Miss Brooks split Ash, Oak and two children from Beech Class into 4 groups. In my group I had Taylor, Kaylen, Troy and Leah.We had to work as a team to make a big terminal for all of us to fit into. We only had an hour and a half to do this so we had our work cut out.

Our main teacher was Jeremy King. He gave a great introduction into the world of engineering. We also had an engineer called Mark who works at Heathrow Airport who helped design and build the new Terminal 2. Before that he did the engineering on the ride Swarm, at Thorpe Park.

Jeremy then explained to us the health and safety of the task. Then he explained to us how to roll six sheets of newspaper in a certain way for it to come out as an indestructible stick. He then showed us something he had created earlier himself which was a stool that could hold his body weight. We then went off into our groups to design our terminals. First we planned out our designs then we organised ourselves as a team. We all then started rolling the newspaper Troy and Kaylen’s job was to apply the glue and use the stikkx machine while Leah and I started to piece together the base of our terminal. The way we were able to connect the structure together was to use the cable ties that we were provided. After that Taylor came over to give me and Leah a helping hand piecing the stikkz together.

We finally finished the whole thing and we were very pleased with our team work.
