Occupation: Draughtsman, printmaker, and sculptor, but is more commonaly known as a painter.

1. Matisse trained as a lawyer, but decided to become a painter.

2. In 1891 he studied at the Academie Julian in Paris, learning from the artists William-Adolphe Bouguereau and Gustave Moreau.

3. At the beginning of his career, Matisse focused on painting landscapes and still-lifes in a traditional style.

4. After a meeting with the Australian artist, John Peter Russell, Matisse’s style changed. He started to create work influenced by the Impressionist movement and he also admired the work of Cezanne.

5. Matisse’s style changed and he began to use bright colours and lose some of the realistic qualities of Impressionism. He became part of the Fauves (wild beasts), and exhibited his work alongside Georges Braque, Raoul Dufy and Gustave Moreau.
